Raíces Profundas is one of Cuba’s most important folkloric music and dance companies, based in Havana and renowned for preserving, performing, and advancing Afro-Cuban and Cuban traditional culture through music, dance, and song. Their work spans Afro-Cuban folkloric forms such as rumba and batá drumming rooted in Yoruba and other African-derived traditions, alongside Cuban popular and rural styles.

This film highlights both Havana and Raíces Profundas, tracing our relationship with the company from our first visit in 2015 to our return in 2023. Through authentic cultural presentations, the film centers the rhythms, percussion, and movement that are foundational to Cuba’s cultural identity, reflecting Raíces Profundas’ ongoing commitment to keeping these traditions alive in Cuba and abroad through performance, education, and exchange.
